Cate Peters, a junior at Monte Vista High in California and the only prep female athlete in the country this season to run under 25 seconds in the 200 meters, sub-55 in the 400 meters and produce a mark faster than 2:07.00 in the 800 meters, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss returning to competition after a month layoff to compete June 15 at the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle, Wash. After winning four titles at the East Bay Athletic League finals May 7, Peters explains her decision not to race during the remainder of the California postseason schedule in order to allow inflammation in her foot to subside and to be able to prepare for competing multiple times at national-level meets in June. She examines the depth of the girls 800 field at the Brooks PR Invitational, including fellow California competitors Mia Chavez of Chino High, an Arizona commit, along with USC-bound Ashlee Gallegos of JSerra High, as well as Arcadia Invitational winner Ali Norce of Normal Community in Illinois, in addition to Texas athletes Samantha Humphries of Flower Mound and Kailey Littlefield of Lucas Lovejoy, plus Morgan Monesmith of Hathaway Brown in Ohio, Lauren Tolbert of Highland Tech in North Carolina and Llily Shapiro of Colts Neck in New Jersey. Peters, who ran 2:06.89 on April 16 at the 62nd Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., looks forward to racing another competitive 800 and shares how her training with Monte Vista coach CJ Edwards has focused on longer sprinting and middle distance events. She analyzes the results after watching the California state meet at home and expresses how grateful she is to reconnect with those athletes in Washington. Peters reflects on suffering two broken bones in her right leg playing for Monte Vista's nationally ranked soccer team as a freshman and how that influenced her decision to focus on track in recent years, and how grateful she is to have the opportunities to compete at meets such as the Brooks PR Invitational and USATF Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Ore.
